The Bluffton Charge: One Preacher's Struggle For Civil Rights

A great and important book
Truly a great achievement. Stephen howie has brilliantly reminded us that it required great strides by all Americans to overcome racism in this country and that the movement did not rely on the leadership of those at the top. His writing style and sense of imagery is truly unique. As a first-time reader of one of Mr. Howie's books, I can understand why my colleagues have reccommended him so highly.

A fine example of the depths of the civil right movement.
Many folks are aware of the larger figures involved in the civil rights movement. This book tells the story of a couple fighting status quo on a much more local level. I gained a much better appreciation of the politics of the south in the 1950's Stephen Howie has done an excellent job telling this story. Had it not been recommended to me I doubt I would have picked it up. I am glad I did!

Bluffton College, not to shabby, eh?
Dancing With the Kobzar is definitely the best book that I have ever read from the "Studies in the Anabaptist and Mennonite History" series. It takes the history of a small Mennonite college in NW Ohio, and actually makes it into interesting read. Not only that, but a clear thesis and structure are presented at the beginning of the work and never once does the author stray away from these. That, along with the books transitions, makes the piece flow together as if it was a New York Times bestseller. Finally, the masterpiece of the book is the index. It seems to have been put together by a genius, and allows for any scholar to find the information that he needs almost instantaneously. A must read for any BC alumni or scholars of the Mennonite religion.
